This sort of arrangement of the discs facilitates minimal impact of movement on the backbone. Each disc closely resembles a jelly donut with an inner gelatin-like nucleus pulposus surrounded by an outer annulus fibrosus. The condition occurs when the inner element of the disc protrudes through a crack in the outer fibrous ring, causing severe complications.
